Katahdin Sheep, 8”x8’, oil on canvas, framed and ready to hang.
The Katahdin, developed at Piel Farm in Maine since the 1950s, is a resilient, wool-free meat sheep. It incorporates Virgin Islands hair sheep for the hair coat, hardiness, and prolificacy, while wooled breeds such as Suffolk enhance size and carcass quality. Named after Mt. Katahdin, although not initially selected for cold adaptation, the breed has demonstrated cold climate tolerance, akin to other hair sheep breeds like St. Croix once acclimated.
